BUEI proudly held the Second Annual Youth Climate Summit (YCS) between Monday, November 21st and Saturday, November 26th. During the weeklong Summit, a new cohort of one hundred and sixty students took part in the virtual sessions held Monday – Thursday and in-person activities on Friday and Saturday.
On the Friday, students had the opportunity to interact directly with our participating environmental and corporate partners at their respective booths during our Environmental Showcase. In between visits by the schools, our partners had the exclusive opportunity to hear from our guest youth activists, Rayne Sullivan, Scarlett Westbrook, and Andrew Fagerheim during their individual presentations scheduled throughout the day. Our guest activists later met with students from the Bermuda College, sharing a conversation around activism, the importance of community and the value of using your unique skillset to bring more awareness to the fight against climate change.
Meanwhile YCS alumni spent Friday collaborating on a presentation capturing their perspective of the past year, which was spent on numerous youth-led environmental initiatives.
On Saturday, 2022 participants returned to BUEI for a chance to interact as a team in the areas of Climate Justice, Conservation and Sustainability. After a presentation by the YCS alumni, and a panel discussion followed by a Q&A with our guest activists, they identified potential projects and voted for their group’s Board Members for the next 12 months.
Following the Summit, our guest activists and YCS Alumni took part in a conservation project facilitated by the Bermuda National Trust. Under the guidance of Nick Hutchings, the group planted 200 red mangroves on the property at Waterville in Paget.
