Youth Climate Initiative Consulting Director – Dr. Rosemarie McMahon
The Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute (BUEI) is excited to announce the appointment of Dr. Rosemarie McMahon as the Consulting Director to the Youth Climate initiative, a fundamental component of Bermuda’s first Youth Climate Summit held in November 2021.
The Youth Climate Initiative was established to support Summit participants through a year of youth-led sustainability, conservation, and climate justice initiatives.
Originally from Ireland, Dr. McMahon is highly versed in the complexities and challenges in environmental leadership and communication, having acquired a M.Sc. in Environmental Management from the Nicholas School of the Environment at Duke University, USA. More recently, she was awarded a PhD from the ETH Zurich, Switzerland, for her research in science communication and visualization.
Dr. McMahon will be responsible for the strategic development of the Youth Climate Initiative, and for building the structure to ensure the programme’s sustainability. This includes developing participants leadership and project implementation capacity and collaborating with local and international stakeholders to drive programme outcomes.
Dr. McMahon conducted several studies on science communication during her PhD, most notably on Atmospheric and Climate Science in collaboration with the Transdisciplinarity Lab at ETH and is well versed in communicating relevant topics at the forefront of current scientific research. Additionally, Dr. McMahan has written and illustrated two picture books for children on the topic of melting glaciers and the spread of a virus, further demonstrating her ability to transfer science knowledge in an accessible way.
“We are delighted to have Dr. McMahon onboard. She brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the Youth Climate Initiative that will serve participants well as they take action on the goals they set during the Summit,” said Karla Lacey, BUEI CEO.
